Behind ‘Make Love not Warcraft’ South Park episode

Recently a South Park episode featured a lot of ingame scenes from World of Warcraft, the four kids battle against a 1337 gamer who has reached a level so high no one knew it existed, yes it's not really authentic, but a lot of fun never the less. I was wondering how they created the game scenes, and stumbled upon this interview at Machinima.com, with members from the South Park animation staff. Very interesting, apparently Blizzard gave them a spot on a Burning Crusade alpha server to do the shots.

"The Blizzard team gave us a special "friends and family" server to play on. Every once an a while a strange player would walk by and check out group the filming. The programmers could instantly kill a player that got in the way of filming. There's a player out there wondering what they had stumbled upon just before they were wiped from the location."

Lost action figures

Todd McFarlane, probably best known for the Spawn character, has produced a series of action figures from Lost. They all come with a detailed base, built-in audio chips, that play memorable quotes from the show, and a prop central to that character's story. So far the following figures are available, props for each character mentioned in parentheses: Jack (Kate's Mugshot), Hurley (Lottery Ticket), Kate (Toy Airplane), Locke (Walkabout Travel Brochure), Charlie (Drive Shaft Ring) and Shannon (Roussea's Island Map). Each wave of figures, this being the first, will also feature a box set, the box set for the first wave contains the hatch with a light-up feature and mini figures of Locke, Kate, Jack and Hurley. The second wave of figures will be released in spring 2007, and will include Sawyer, Sayid, Desmond, Sun, Jin, Mr. Eko, and the box set will contain the Oceanic Flight 815 crash sight.

Heroes

Minor spoilers ahead.

Until recently I was only watching one tv-show regulary; the third season of Lost. Now I've stumbled upon another one, called Heroes. It's about a group of people who discover they have super powers, one can heal her wounds in seconds, another can bend time and space, a third can fly, etc. The show is a continuity-hell, mostly when following this Japanese guy, Hiro, the one who can bend time and space. It's also got a lot of plot errors, that are supposed to look coincidental but are too unrealistic to be convincing. Still, Heroes is actually a lot of fun, it's about super heroes, and that more or less says it all. What you may call super villains have already been revealed, so I'm really looking forward to some exciting battles when all the heroes, hopefully, gang up.

I just finished watching the latest episode, no. 6, and I'm so hooked! As mentioned Heroes has some continuity and plot flaws, but I don't care. Especially one scene stands out in my mind at the moment, the Japanese time/space guy (picture) comes back from the future all suited up with a katana and everything, being all cool and slick (he's a bit of a geek in the present), which means they'll probably all join up together and create a Justice League/X-Men/<random superhero group>-like gang in the future, and I can't explain how much I'm looking forward to that. Also…

… this guy is hilarous.

Den bedste serie nogensinde – Firefly

Jeg kan ikke forstå, jeg aldrig har fået nævne Firefly herinde…

Jeg kunne skrive flere sider om Firefly, en meget speciel sci-fi serie af Joss Whedon, men jeg skal gøre det kort. Firefly er en genial serie, der blander den klassiske western-genre med science fiction. Serien havde premiere på FOX i 2002, men blev annulleret efter kun 11 afsnit, bl.a. fordi FOX valgte ikke at vise pilot-afsnittet, som det første. Universet og personerne i Firefly er det mest fantastiske ved serien og de kræver en rimelig lang introduktionshistorie, hvortil Joss Whedon lavede et 2 timer langt pilot-afsnit. FOX mente dog ikke der var action nok, samt at publikum skulle fænges fra starten, og valgte derfor at sende et andet afsnit, hvilket logisk nok ødelagde hele seriens struktur.

Firefly havde dog masser af fans, som prøvede at få nogle flere sæsoner ud af serien og da første sæson udkom på DVD blev den hurtigt en bestseller. De fik dog ikke planlagt flere sæsoner, Joss Whedon fik derimod Universal til at lave en film, som fortsætter hvor serien slap, filmen hedder Serenity og kan nu også købes på DVD.

Jeg har haft Firefly i et længere stykke tid, men har først fået købt Serenity nu. Alt i alt syntes jeg filmen afslutter serien rigtig godt, jeg kan dog godt forstå at folk der ikke har set serien, vil mene at filmen er ret dårlig. Man får bl.a., logisk nok, ikke den samme beskrivelse af universet og personerne i filmen, men det gør man jo i serien.

Scientology or: How I learned to stop Worrying and Love Xenu

Tom Cruise, member of Scientology, the funniest religion in the world, is far from pleased with the creators of South Park, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, at the moment.

In November 2005 the South Park episode "Trapped in the Closet" aired, it made fun of the Church of Scientology, and in it Tom Cruise won't come out of a closet, because Kyle, who Cruise believes is the reincarnation of L. Ron Hubbard, doesn't like his acting. The trouble started when Comedy Central wanted to show the episode again. This time Tom Cruise felt it was nescessary to sue Paramount, owner of Comedy Central, he also stated that he would not go on the press tour for his upcoming movie Mission Impossible: 3, because it was being distributed by Paramount, if the episode's reairing wouldn't be cancelled.

Not exactly a surprising move from the lunatic, unfortunately Paramount agreed and removed the episode from the program. You'd think the farce was over now, but no, Isaac Hayes, the voice of Chef, suddenly decided to quit. He's also a member of the Church of Scientology, and apparently self-irony isn't one of the values they practise. I knew Scientology is a pretty crazy belief system, but after a bit of researching I'm more or less in chock. Scientology believes that the alien Xenu brought billions of aliens to the earth, 75 million years ago, dumped them around volcanoes and blew them up with hydrogen bombs. The souls of these beings infected the humans and today they are the reason that we have problems such as fear and uncertainty. Did I mention that the creator of Scientology was a science-fiction author? Anyway, Stone and Parker decided to show the episode outside in London, on a big screen, for free. Lastly:

"So, Scientology, you may have won THIS battle, but the million-year war for earth has just begun! Temporarily anozinizing our episode will NOT stop us from keeping Thetans forever trapped in your pitiful man-bodies. Curses and drat! You have obstructed us for now, but your feeble bid to save humanity will fail! Hail Xenu!!!" – South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, responding to Viacom/Comedy Central's bowing to Scientology/Tom Cruise pressure to not re-show "Trapped in the Closet" episode
