iPhone App: Movie Ratings

I recently updated my Game of Thrones app to support iPad, and am now looking at a new idea for an application. Basically, I often find myself wanting to know one or more of three things about a movie: Its IMDb rating, its Rotten Tomatoes rating and/or its runtime. As far as I can see, no application on the app store currently does this in any easy way, so I’ve been programming my own. Here’s a prototype screenshot:

Searching works fine, it’s not just a mock-up, it’s just done in a very sluggish way at the moment. And I don’t have a good name for it, any suggestions?

How much of a film addict are you?

How many of IMDb’s top 250 movies have you seen? Test yourself here. I have seen 45.2%, you can compare my results with your own by using this link:

Rating movies

I rate all movies I see using the 10-grade rating system that most movie websites utilize, and I thought I’d write a small description on how I use the grades, just to get some discussion going. It is, of course, very subjective, and if I look through my voting history on IMDb I’ll probably make a lot of adjustments. Anyway, here goes:

10 – Fantastic movie, personal favorite, high replay value. (Example: Le Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain, Fight Club)
9 – Fantastic movie. (Example: RoboCop, Twelve Monkeys)
8 – Great movie. (Example: Gladiator, Batman Begins)
7 – Above average, minor annoyances, but highly enjoyable. (Example: Jarhead, Hard Candy)
6 – Average, some annoyances, but overall enjoyable. (Example: Constantine, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back)
5 – Below average, not recommendable. (Example: Cars, Deja Vu)
4 – Bad movie, often big movies with horrible scripts. (Example: Fantastic Four, Scary Movie 4)
3 – Horrible. (Example: I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, Hostel)
2 – Painfully bad, movies that even I could’ve made better. (Example: The Seeker: The Dark is Rising, Eye for Eye)
1 – Inexcusable and not worth even discussing. TV-movies and the likes. (Example: D-War, Epic Movie)

IMDb movie project

I love movies, and I watch as many as possible, therefore I got this idea to watch all movies on the IMDb top 250. I created a document on Google Spreadsheets to organize the progress a bit, and just wanted to share it with you. I was a bit surprised that I've only watched 82 movies so far.

Movies on IMDb's top 250 list I've watched.
